About this deal

I was sent a review copy of these books free of charge; however, this review is my honest opinion as a teacher. Young students will enjoy the multi-cultural "friends at the piano" who introduce white-key names, basic rhythms, and a variety of songs which span classical, folk, and blues. Written for the young beginner student ages 5-6, My First Piano Adventure captures the child’s playful spirit with five “friends at the piano,” charming songs, and rhythm and technique games. This delightful book contains a selection of piano pieces from some of our best-loved composers, including Sarah Watts and Heather Hammond, as well as some exclusive new pieces from Brian Davidson. Maintaining the child-centered philosophy of the series, the friends at the piano from the A Books introduce students to the music of two new composer friends Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven.

This section is structured around a number of key pieces of music, each selected to illustrate particular points, demonstrate the versatility of the instrument and encourage musical appreciation. With real passion the author describes how piano music can sing, dance or paint a picture as in by Clair de Lune by Debussy. Whilst there are many such early-stage piano tutor books on the market, there are few which place as such a strong emphasis on the development of musicianship as these do. Suitable for children aged 5 years and over, this book facilitates a seamless transition from pre-stave reading onto stave reading, leading effortlessly into the highly acclaimed Get Set!

It includes favourites like ‘Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses’, ‘Peter Taps with One Hammer’ and ‘The Wheels on the. A strong focus on technique embedded in the book through playful technique games, chants, and carefully-composed pieces that gently lead the child into pianistic motions. Music notation is explored through stepwise directional reading, pattern recognition, and changing hand positions, all in the context of engaging songs, games and creative exploration at the piano. Also doubling as a xylophone to help develop their musical development, there are six song cards they can play along to that are all colour-coded with the notes.
