It is also recommended that you dry hop the beer with a further 10gms of Fuggles. This can either be during the cooling phase if you have an immersion chiller, during primary fermentation or in the keg (provided they are contained in a muslin bag). Ruddles County and Ruddles Best continue to sell well in the off-trade but sales have been declining in pubs. Ruddles campaigned successfully for the independence of Rutland as a county - this year it was granted the right to leave Leicestershire to become the UK's smallest county with fewer residents than Slough, in Berkshire. Ruddles Brewery ( G. Ruddle & Co) was a brewery in Rutland, England. The brand is now owned by Greene King who still brew beers under the Ruddles name in Suffolk, although the current recipes are not those used at the original brewery. [1]

The recipes that follow are those created by Peter, based on various formulations he has tried over the years, that attempt to match the style and flavour characteristics of the named brew. They will not make an EXACT copy of the beer as it is currently produced (as brewers tend to change their ingredients depending upon price and availablilty) but they will all make very tasty beers that you may find more interesting than those available to you if you only brew from single and two can beer kits. My thanks go out to Peter and Stephen (yobrew) for their permission to reproduce them here. There is some rationalisation going on this year and I think the Ruddles situation is part of that. For what it's worth, all my sources for Ruddles County agree about the blend of Northdown , Bramling Cross, Fuggles, Goldings hops. Sources at other breweries felt it was almost inevitable that Ruddles would be closed down. One senior brewer said: "It seems we are losing a few breweries this year.Morland brand and brewing director Rupert Thompson said: "There are also significant export opportunities, particularly in North America and Europe." Ruddles also are part of Aldi's ‘Inspired Cuisine' line with their beer in the Beef filled Yorkshire Pudding.

The local Langham well water was said to give the beer a unique character and quality which enhanced the brewery's reputation. The difficulty in reproducing elsewhere the taste of the beers has led to the premier beer being jocularly referred to as "Ruddles Counterfeit". A television commercial for Ruddles in 1993 featured the last appearance of Vivian Stanshall narrating as Hubert, brother of Sir Henry Rawlinson of Rawlinson End played by Mel Smith and a cross-dressing Dawn French. [7] Chief executive Mike Watts said: "We are delighted to be adding the respected Ruddles brand to our business. I am married and live with my wife in the beautiful Kentish Weald. For six years we both ran a successful real-ale off-licence, which as well as selling cask ale, offered one of the best selections of bottled beers in the south east.
