About this deal

The other thing to consider is the lifetime of the battery. Since Ferrex is one of Aldi’s “Store Brands” (as far as I know) you probably won’t be able to go down to the local hardware store and find a replacement battery when the included one eventually dies. All batteries like this will go bad at some point but with other brands you can generally find replacements pretty easily so the entire tool isn’t worthless. This does have a three year warranty and there should be some company that offers replacement parts and support so you should be able to get one, just with more effort. With other brands you can also get more tools that use the same batteries. The Competition EDITOR’S NOTE: A number of people have asked us about where to find replacement line. The Gardenline trimmer uses a 0.055 inch (1.4 mm) line, which is not a common size in the United States (although it does seem more common overseas). Most hardware stores don’t carry line in this size, which can be frustrating for consumers. Last year I bought all three of Aldi’s Gardenline cordless yard tools: The edger/trimmer, the hedge trimmer and the blower. I wanted to wait to review them until I had a chance to use them for all of last year. I am happy to report that I am very satisfied with all three. Also of note: Aldi now sells its lawn equipment under the Ferrex private label. Aldi seems to be using some of the same suppliers, though, so our review of the Gardenline trimmer may also apply to the Ferrex one.

This looks to be a different model or updated version compared to last year but the price has remained the same. I am not sure what specific changes were made but in the pictures below it seems like there were some changes. But those could just be cosmetic changes.

Unboxing the trimmer was rather uneventful. It is a lot lighter than anticipated (~10-15 lbs.; no official weight found). It comes assembled with the exception of the shield and battery. The shield clips on without effort. The battery and charger were in their own boxes, but they are equally easy to get working together. I plugged the battery in to charge and unplugged it the next morning. These are light duty items, so as long as you keep that in mind and your needs are not severe, they are an excellent value. I think for most average sized suburban yards, they would be plenty adequate. The hedge trimmer works great. It is a bit smaller than some I’ve seen but I have no complaints at all about its function. As I mentioned above, you’d have to do an awful lot of trimming to run through a whole battery charge. It uses the included 20V rechargeable battery to power the trimmer which may a little on the small side for some yards. Unfortunately Aldi doesn’t list the size of the battery for this year’s model. Last year’s model had a 1.5 Ah battery and I would expect it is the same or possibly bumped up a bit to a 2.0 Ah.
