For a lot of the time, as I don’t camp in the cold so much any more (and I’ve got a much warmer bag for when I do), I’m in the thinner liner and using the sleeping bag proper as a duvet. The Berghaus Intrepid 1000 is constructed using lightweight materials and is filled with a high powered insulation. The average female does feel the cold more than the average male and as the comfort rating is a middle-ground for both, a couple of degrees leeway should be accounted for either way. These sleeping bags are lighter than the rectangular bags and occupy less space when packing – perfect for backpacking. I have the (now) older version of this bag and it weighs about 1400gms when packed into the stuff sack.

Packing away is easy by simply ‘stuffing’ it into its sack (which at first looks to be impossible) and it is compact and very light – ideal for carrying in a backpack. A cut up wooden broom handel works , you need to set it up so its just a bit longer than the straps 0n your bag when they are either side of the saddle.These bags are great for when it’s starting to get a little colder at night or if you’re the type of person to feel the cold in the evening.

I find that having a small square of reflective material (old emergency foil blanket) and additional foam mat really boosts warmth. A drawcord can often be included, allowing the user to tighten the hood and retain as much heat as possible. Sad fact I have spent way too much time on KIT I think that is almost more of the atttraction then the actual cycle camping. There will be some products that are amazing quality and packed full of additional features or specifications, but do take the time to really get an idea if you need that level of quality or if your budget and needs mean you should get something else.Provide as much information as you can, and if you bought it before tell us where you got it from, when, how much you paid for it, and of course how you got on with it. These are the best sleeping bags for mild winter camping where you aren’t expecting to deal with snowstorms and frost in the mornings.

Doing Calder Valley way in a couple of weeks bike packing… current sleeping bag isn’t the warmest, berghaus intrepid 700 1-2 season. Sleeping without a padded mat is, of course, possible – but we would always recommend that additional layer.
