Netflix's "Stranger Things" took its subtitles to the next level with season four, with descriptions like "tentacles squelching wetly" that sparked social-media conversation. They are steeped in actors with thick accents reciting countless characters and locations that can easily be mixed up.

Subtitles can also be helpful if your TV doesn't have the best sound quality (although there are ways to adjust that). Sure, you might notice something new with subtitles, like a prominent sigh, or a quiet sound or whisper. It seems to get confused and record or download those and then not download the next episode in UHD, but I did manage to find the rest of the UHD ones .And so for each programme, you need to Pause it, move to the little speech bubble icon if it is there, and turn the subtitles On. If you want to be fully immersed, one can argue subtitles are just as bad as Googling a character name during a show or movie. So to get subtitles, it is necessary to press the ‘*’ button on the remote, arrow right to the Subtitles option (furthest right) and select English there (if subtitles are available for the programme, which is not always the case ). Same issue for me, almost 1 week after the episode aired and still no subtitles leaving me unable to watch this programme.

With a fantasy show like this I like to read the subs because it's quicker to pick up the character names and follow the storyline better. With a recent survey revealing that people are increasingly using them, I took a look at the case for — and against —turning on subtitles. Does anyone know where I can find just these sections online of just the subtitles so I can read along on my phone while watching on the telly?

I’m no technophobe but it’s impossible to get subtitles on an LG TV even though the subtitle logo is displayed. At the end of the day, it really just comes down to preference, but as I said, I generally don't use subtitles for the reason above — unless it's a big-budget TV series based on popular IP, apparently. On "The Rings of Power" especially — with its two dozen characters and locations, and expansive mythology — it's helped me be more invested in the series. It is astonishing that they wouldn't do everything in their power to try and meet this minimum expectation with a show of this magnitude. And subtitles for content in another language are vastly superior to dubbing, the process of adding a vocal performance over the existing audio (but that's an entirely different argument).
