Seeing as this is a picture book though, I decided to listen to the audiobook while reading along (which I highly recommend doing)! I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic!

I love that the main character is a female black girl and she joins a Jewish boy (one can see the yarmulke) and together they clean up their hometown, picking up empty discarded bottles in the park.

Honestly, I've become an even bigger fan of Gorman's work over the past few months and SEPTEMBER CAN'T COME SOON ENOUGH! The illustrations, created with acrylics and colored pencil, have much more appeal for me than the text since each page seems to invite readers to join in this song of change in whatever way they can--in voice, with an instrument, or even through helping hands or actions. In January 2021, she became the youngest poet to read at a presidential inauguration, reading her poem "The Hill We Climb" at the inauguration of Joe Biden. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated!The illustrations by Loren Long are just beautiful, and, as I've come to love about children's picture books, give another layer of non-verbal storytelling, which is equally as profound as Amanda Gorman's, adding to the ways in which this is the most hopeful book I have read it quite a long time. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods.

I like how the text is *about* making change, but the pictures are *of* making change -- small acts of service enacted. If you think about writing a song, for example, you may start by writing a poem, or finding a poem you like and setting it to music. After watching Poet Laureate Amanda Gordon speak so eloquently at President Biden's (January, 21, 2021) inauguration I was mesmerized and an instant fan of this young, very talented wordsmith. What’s more, Loren Long’s pictures are glorious, with their changes in perspective, cinematic colour, considered characterisations. It means that we hope alongside our two storytellers, for the ‘ courage’ needed to build ‘tolerance‘.The sessions could be added to with art activities and through further learning in PSHE, science, geography and history. This resource has been designed to be used by an entire school to foster a shared learning experience around one text and to engender written outcomes – some with the same audiences and purposes, some not – that are ‘at pitch’ for each phase/stage but that will also aid revision, catch-up and extension where (and in whichever form) needed.
