About this deal

That others found his ingenuity threatening was not his problem; perhaps they should be the ones consuming mood-regulating drugs. The work contains incendiary revelations of the past that all family members have buried deep, as well as blossoming news about the future. When Ken and Abby’s unknown half sister, Steph, appears on the scene, thorny truths come to light, upending the Gardner family story and detonating long-suppressed emotions. Brodeur’s extensive knowledge and respect for the landscape is transcendental; whether or not you are familiar with the famed New England island, you will finish this book with a deeper appreciation for its ecosystem. The synopsis and the authors memoir suggested a tale of dysfunctional families and mental health, whereas the cover and the authors previous fiction hinted at more of a beach-read.

Aside from his work for children’s fiction, Adam also does regular editorial and advertising illustration work. Ken’s wife Jenny plays a central role as does Stephanie, a living and breathing surprise from Adam’s past who is visiting the Cape and is tiptoeing around the family, waiting for the right moment to introduce herself. In the decades since those early successes, he’d become one of the foremost experts on cetacean biology, studying the population dynamics and communication of humpback whales. The action of Little Monsters is in the lead-up to a large party attended/hosted by siblings with a difficult relationship with their father. We meet Adam Gardner, a brilliant oceanographer with an almost obsessive fascination with whales, counting down the summer months to his 70th birthday in September.

Our 3 year old did laugh when the witch bounced of the walls so it’s not terrible but I don’t think this book lives up to the hype. Capitalism, the lingering grief over a mother lost too soon, and the family inheritance of mental- and physical health.Interestingly, the novel is set in an immediately recognizable period of history: 2016, right before the presidential election.

The book begins with the impending retirement and 70th birthday of a famed oceanographer, Adam Gardner, coming to grips with the realization that at the end of the day, our relevance in the world is not what we believed it to be in youth. With a terrific memoir and now a great work of fiction on my bookshelf, Adrienne Brodeur has a fan in me. And I get that the author may want yo leave it open to interpretation … but I wanted to see how it resolved - or didn’t resolve.
