Make sure your hands and all the equipment are clean. Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after application to limit germ transmission. You should sterilize your eyedropper and aspirator bulb after each use. Use the nasal drops prior to feeding so your baby can still breathe through their nose. Don’t use the nasal drops more frequently than every 3 to 4 hours. Safety Precautions to Take

Use warm steam from a hot shower to loosen trapped mucus. You can hold your baby with the door closed in your bathroom as the water runs in the shower. In most cases, baby congestion caused by respiratory tract infections can be treated at home with simple remedies that help alleviate symptoms and gradually move the virus out of the body. Although most colds go away in about five to seven days for children, it could take up to two weeks for newborns and younger babies. Baby Congestion Symptoms As mentioned above, babies have an underdeveloped immune system. Hence they may catch a cold easily. If you follow the guidelines given here, administering nasal sprays to your child will become easy. If you do not prefer the use of sprays, try one of the alternate methods. But remember, never self-medicate your child and always ensure a paediatrician validates the alternative methods before you try them. These precautionary measures will help you ensure that your baby does not go through another set of medical issues and recovers soon. After stirring them in and ensuring that they have dissolved completely, take as much solution as required and keep the rest in a clean bowl for no more than 24 hours.

Usage

Using an aspirator bulb, gently remove any newly loosened mucus. Squeeze out all the air in the bulb before inserting it in your baby’s nostril and slowly releasing the pressure. Note that some types of nasal syringes come with removable tips in a range of sizes, allowing you to find one that’s a perfect fit for your baby’s nose. For nose ointment – squeeze a small amount onto your finer or a cotton bud and gently dab inside the nostril(s).

Just remember that you need to clean the bulb syringe between uses. Otherwise, you run the risk of exposing your baby to bacteria every time you use the syringe. To do this, use warm soapy water, and squeeze and release it into the bulb syringe. Humidify the air. Loosen the mucus by using a cold-steam humidifier in your baby’s room. This can especially help if your baby is congested at night. Once you have your saline nose drop solution, you’ll need to be prepared to administer it. Simply insert one to two drops of solution into one nostril and allow it to travel into the nasal cavity. Repeat on the other side.Similarly to adults, when your baby is laying down, they might become more congested. Aside from bedtime, try to keep your little one in an upright position as much as possible so that the mucus can naturally drain out of their nose. This can even include baby wearing during naptime to keep them upright. Just like with the bulb syringe, you can use a nasal aspirator with or without nasal drops (that will depend on the consistency of the mucus). Likewise, keep don’t use an aspirator more than three to four times per day. And be sure to clean your nasal aspirator between sessions to prevent the risk of reintroducing bacteria into your baby’s nose. Lie your baby across your lap with their head angled slightly toward the floor so you can use gravity to help the saline solution get where it needs to be. But if you’re determined to keep your baby upright even during bedtime, you’ll need to sit up with them as opposed to raising your baby’s mattress.
