Es posible que pase por las librerías sin pena ni gloria, pero a mi me parece un libro que, sin ser una maravilla, es muy bonito y agradable de leer, muy tierno en el tratamiento de los personajes. A pesar de que trata temas duros como la depresión, el suicidio, la pérdida de seres queridos, la incertidumbre sobre la propia identidad, el libro tiene algo de optimista y es gracias al personaje de Haru, que está presente en toda la novela aunque sepamos de su muerte ya en la primera página. Haru mueve los hilos para que su hija y sus amigos encuentren la felicidad. Por ello es, sobre todo, una historia de amor, que es el mayor sentimiento de generosidad que existe. En definitiva, no es un gran libro que vaya a llegar a todo el mundo, pero yo lo he disfrutado muchísimo. Muriel Barbery miluje Japonsko, čo som cítila už v jej predchádzajúcej knihe, fascinuje ju tak veľmi, že sa tam s manželom dokonca usadili. Jej vášeň pre túto krajinu prebleskuje na každej strane.

He finds himself in a cleanly compartmentalized area featuring another Pearl who organizes all of Pearl's possessions. Steven asks about the whereabouts of the phone; after a search by Pearl fails to find it, she guesses that it may be with the "other Pearls", but advises him not to go to where they are because "it's a mess". Nevertheless, Steven insists, and Pearl takes him inside her gemstone yet again. The cycle continues several times as Steven is taken further into Pearl's gemstone, passing through her memories including Rose's pregnancy and the aftermath of the Gem War. Eventually, he reaches the moment where Rose Quartz has just shattered Pink Diamond. He steps closer, and she raises her head and opens her eyes, which resemble Pearl's.

Both Rose and Paul are grappling with the loss of beloveds: for Paul, his late wife, and for Rose, both parents and the grandmother who raised her. In the days leading up to her visit to the lawyer, Haru’s Belgian assistant, mentee and friend, Paul shows Rose around a number of temples and a cemetery, according to her father’s wishes. They share meals, tea and drinks at various restaurants, yakitori vendors and tea houses. Initially Rose is hostile, snarky: “What can he give me now?” she asked. “What can absence and death give me? A Single Rose” is a poetic journey taken over just a few days by two strangers brought together by a death. Rose received news that Haru, her father, had died. She must take her first trip to Kyo¯to Japan to settle his estate and to learn about the father that she never knew. This journey changes her life in ways she could never have anticipated. At times, Rose’s frequent tears and passivity seem to contradict Barbery’s characterization of her, but maybe that’s the point. After all, Rose is a close study of emotional change. Upon arrival in Kyoto, her interior landscape begins to change as fast as her exterior one. We see these layers build up one by one, like at dinner one night, when Rose watches the chef place speared fish on skewers onto the grill. “He was sweating profusely, wiping his face with a white towel, but Rose did not feel disgusted the way she would have in Paris.” In the first stanza of ‘One Perfect Rose,’the speaker begins by stating very simply the “he,” an unknown suitor, has sent her “A single flow’r”. The shortening of “flower” to “flow’r” is an example of syncope. As the title suggests, this rose was “perfect” in every way. It conveyed his intentions in a direct and incredibly effective way. It is the right “messenger” for his affections. The description of the flower is expanded in the next stanzas, aided in part by the poet’s use of personification.
