About this deal

It’s nice to be able to choose your material based on how you’ll use the dripper: If you plan to travel with it, you might want metal or plastic, and you might choose ceramic for its looks. A professional roaster/barista associate of Daily Coffee News did observe a difference in flavor in the cup when comparing a Kyuemon porous ceramic filter to its more familiar counterparts. Although we experimented with the ratios a little bit, we generally stuck with 28 grams of the Bella Donovan or 26 grams of the Gatuyaini to about 400 grams of water. Aside from a few outliers, most of the drippers we tested brewed decent-tasting coffee, but we focused on the ones that produced the most expressive yet well-rounded cups of coffee.

This convenience might outweigh all else if you’re not interested in getting into the intricacies of the pour-over method. It seems like every other week there’s a new pourover dripper on the market, each with its own slight performance tweak. Cone-bottom drippers like the Hario drain out of a single point, making the taste of the coffee more dependent on how you pour. While it does negate the need for an additional paper filter, the energy and water required for the cleaning and maintenance would seem to counteract any resource efficiency.

One aspect that could frustrate some people is that the Kalita doesn’t have much volume, which limits the amount of ground coffee you can reasonably use. As the popularity of porous ceramic coffee filters continues to grow, the Cerapotta stands out as a top choice for discerning coffee enthusiasts.Pour-over isn’t the ideal method for brewing super-oily dark roasts, and you should avoid it altogether when using cheap, pre-ground coffee. Brew time: The overall brew time is longer than with typical pour overs, so the goal is to get the water through the coffee as fast as possible. As a product, it comes packaged with its own ceramic holder/dripper, which has one large hole at the bottom and can be positioned on top of a mug or other vessel like any other dripper.

Fine filtration: Ceramic filters can effectively remove fine particles, including bacteria, sediment, and other impurities, depending on the specific filter's design and pore size. Previously, such filters were a niche product, often limited to Japan and other regions with strong coffee culture. In recent years, porous ceramic coffee filters have gained popularity for their ability to deliver a clean and nuanced coffee experience. While this was annoying, we don’t think it’s a deal breaker for everyone, since it’s easy to get those filters online. From the coffee-making perspective, it could be an interesting experiment or a device that you pull out from time-to-time. Ten years later the company was given an award from the Science and Technology Office of the Japanese Government for their contribution to the development of this technology, particularly in its self-watering planter application.

For our 2019 tests, we decided to try brewing two different types of coffee with each dripper: Blue Bottle Coffee’s Bella Donovan blend (a darker medium roast) and Café Grumpy’s Kenyan Gatuyaini (a lighter, brighter single-origin roast). The carefully chosen raw materials produce a fine but uniform porosity that prevents clogging over time, ensuring a consistent and hassle-free brewing experience. Its porous ceramic filter is at the heart of the Cerapotta, made using the esteemed Hasami porcelain manufacturing techniques. The Hario V-60 Coffee Dripper (Size 02) has an iconic design and brews tasty, dynamic coffee that’s on a par with coffee brewed by the Kalita Wave.
